Hypertension is defined as a systolic pressure at rest with an average of 140 mm Hg or higher, diastolic blood pressure at rest averaged 90 mm Hg or more, or both. Without But the higher the blood pressure, the greater the risk of complications, even within the broad normal blood pressure for these limits are somewhat arbitrary. In the majority of young people with high blood pressure, systolic and diastolic pressure is high. However, many older people with hypertension have a high systolic pressure (140 mm Hg or higher) with normal or low diastolic pressure (less than 90 mm Hg). This disorder is called isolated systolic hypertension.
