Laughing your way through the golden years

No matter what the experts say, aging is difficult. It takes a lot of luck, good genes, family support and activity to make this work trip. There is an added quality that really lightens the load as the elderly face their "golden years" and that is the ability to laugh at yourself and life.

As the aches and pains start of assembly, and the onset of age to feel alone in their plight, humor is a powerful potion for the maintenance of an attitude for success. Life becomes a mountain to climb, and hiking is much easier if older people navigate their journey by making fun of a challenging world. Seniors must learn to float downstream, driven by water passing through the twigs, branches and rocks along the stream of life.

Lessons for the young at heart

When it comes to humor, late George Carlin would have been proud of my mother. At 93 years old, can take a life event and turn it into an amazing and dramatic story filled with adventure and lessons to be learned. Recently, she had a stint in the hospital due to atrial fibrillation, an indicator of congestive heart failure. Although the heart my mom is pushing enough blood, the upper chamber is showing signs of wear.

When she was released home from the hospital, My mother graduated from two pills to an assortment of blood thinners such as your cardiologist tried to regulate his heartbeat. He stayed in a nursing care center for awhile and then was sent back to his independent living apartment on a trial. Several days later at 5 am, stayed in her bathroom and sat in his hip. She had the presence of mind to crawl to the traction cable to get the attention of the nursing care staff. Immediately he arrived, I called and paramedics were contacted for another round to the emergency room.

When I arrived at the emergency room, that shot, said: "Son, I feel bad up. "" He used his walker to go to the bathroom? "I replied." No, I was filled with all sorts of roles, "revealed shyly and continued, "But I was very close to the bathroom," as if that mattered. They x-ray and had hip fracture - the femur be fixed. When he reached the quarter of 2107, staff moved in his hospital bed. An internist promptly visited her and asked, "What time a doctor? "It's 8 am the girl. Why do you ask?" "I have to leave here in an hour. I have to go to the salon. No I can sit here looking like this. By the way, how do you say your last name? "The doctor said slowly ..." ... GHIAMADI GHIAMADI "he said. "Oh, that must have been a serious problem for you when I was in elementary school," she replied.

Seeing the humor in any situation

For the next few days, cardiologists controlling bowels of my mother trying to get her ready to handle the surgery. My wife told my mother about the nursing care he was receiving excellent. "You're getting so much attention, Oma." "Yes, and you can be a tiara on end of the day if I play my cards, "she said.

Several days later, the surgery was "all systems go." The launch had been delayed several times, but now we were doing the countdown. Exasperated, my mother had the nursing staff on alert. "We this show on the road. Just make sure that "cut" the right leg, "she joked. As its wheels until surgery, she continues, "Where are you taking me? It seems that we are heading for the parking. Hey, do not let them stick a knife in me if I'm not mature enough! "

When we reached the pre-op area, a nurse we met there. When the nurse leaned over to take my mother's necklace was, my mother made grace. Hey, I guarantee it's been a while since anyone looked at that area. "When the nurse finished laughing, my mother asked the critical question ". What is the leg that is being traded today?" Mom was playing so elusive. "I really do not know" my mother replied. "Is Gladys the left? "said the nurse." I think it's fair, I mean, I think it is fair that is to the left ... Is not it? "Morphine not seem to affect his genius. It reminded me of Abbott and Costello, but this was a monologue.

She took the liberty of making surgical cap before the anesthesiologist came to give the "juice." The orthopedic surgeon and a ride asked my mother if she had any questions. "I have only one question for you. Is it really big enough? My daughter tells me you were born in 1970. Is that true? "

The anesthesiologist came in and told my mother that his heart could handle the surgery and proceeded to inject in the arm for her to take a nap. "The surgeon looked so young. How many years you? "she asked. The youthful doctor said," How old do you think I am? "" I think you're about 62, "said my Mom. He grimaced and went back a minute and when my mother had adapted to their evaluation. "It is best for me to say that I feel. With the top of thought who were older. You have to be around 45. You see, my son is in his early 60s, and I love it. "As I gave him a kiss on the cheek, she was outside the surgery and as she turned her head I heard him say to me, "Good luck in your new book. I hope it is a success."

I never had doubts my mother do it through surgery. He had successfully created an atmosphere that put everyone in their sphere of influence in the facility. She chuckled your way through an outrageous situation and brought them all with his inner world in his sense of humor. As my mother always believed, he was doing comics, the method tried and true travel through the golden years.
