heart disease statistics
simple statistics problem?

Hypothetically, if 5% of the population has heart disease and 8% have cancer, is the probability that Tom will receive one or both of the two diseases?

1. You're asking this in the Economy section of yahoo answers evaluator Math section why? 2. Do we have any reason to believe that heart disease and cancer occur independently? If they are completely independent, we get a response are entirely related to get a completely different response. 3. If you have two dice, one red and one green, then: A. the probability of rolling a 1 on the red die is 1 / 6 B. the probability of throwing a pair in the green die is 1 / 3 C. the probability of throwing a 1 on the red die or including one on the green die is 1 / 3 + 1 / 6 - (1 / 3) (1 / 6) = 1 / 3 + (1 / 6) (2 / 3) = 1 / 6 + (1 / 3 ) (5 / 6) To see this, imagine a rectangle with a line through, one third of the way down and a vertical line, one sixth of the way through.
