Coronary calcium channel blockers for heart failure - amlodipine
Calcium antagonists are used to treat high blood pressure for correct abnormal heart rhythms, and to alleviate the type of chest pain called angina. Like other calcium channel blockers, amlodipine acts by relaxing muscle smooth the arterial wall, decreasing the total peripheral resistance and therefore reduce blood pressure, angina, which increases blood flow to muscle heart. Blood pressure is the force of blood against artery walls as it flows through them. Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the tissues of the body. As blood flows through arteries it pushes against the inside of artery walls. The more pressure exerted blood on the walls of the arteries, higher blood pressure. The other name of hypertension is high blood pressure. The size of the small arteries also affects blood pressure. When the muscular walls of arteries are relaxed, or dilated, the pressure of blood flowing through them is less than when the artery walls narrow, or contract. Blood pressure is highest when the heart beats to push blood into the arteries. When the heart relaxes to fill with blood again, the pressure is at its lowest point.

The kidneys try to compensate for lack of heart by retention of salt and more water to increase blood volume. This excess fluid can also cause edema. In due time, as the condition worsens with time these measures are not sufficient to keep the heart pumping enough blood needed by the body. Kidneys often weaken under these circumstances, further aggravating the situation and make treatment more difficult. Most patients with mild to moderate heart failure can be treated successfully with diet and exercise programs, along with appropriate medication. Patients with severe heart failure can have in mind a heart transplant.
