Keeping Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) In Check

It's a common condition but if left untreated, hypertension or high blood pressure (BP) can lead to serious complications.

Hypertension is a ‘deceptive disease'. It does not mean that the higher your blood pressure, the more discomfort or obvious symptoms you will experience. You can have a high BP but still feel perfectly all right. But it does not take away the injury to your vital organs or the adverse impact that hypertension is causing your body in the long term.

The point is: Do not rely on symptoms because hypertension is one of the classic a-symptomatic conditions that can hit you with no obvious signs. Though dizziness and aches are some common symptoms of a hypertension condition, these are not specific and can be indicative of other medical conditions.

The normal range of human blood pressure is 140 (systolic)/90 (diastolic) so anything above this reading is considered hypertension. Stress and tension can cause temporary increase in blood pressure, but for the most part, hypertension tends to be a medical condition that afflicts people above the age of 40.

Even for people whose BP readings are within the ‘acceptable' range, there is a subgroup of patients

– people with diabetes, protein in their urine, patients with chronic kidney dysfunction or those with existing cardiac conditions – where a BP reading of 130/80 is considered high because their threshold to internal injury is much lower.

Vigilance

Though hypertension is not a reversible condition, it can be controlled and maintained with medication and appropriate lifestyle intervention. The doctor's advice: even if you have no obvious symptoms or discomfort, develop a habit of doing regular self-monitoring of your BP at home once a week instead of waiting till the next clinic visit or medical appointment.

Regular measurement of your blood pressure at home using a portable blood pressure monitor is better and more effective at managing hypertension than one taken during a single clinic visit. Such vigilance may be well worth the while. Although hypertension is not immediately life-threatening, it is a high risk factor that can lead to serious illnesses like renal failure and cardiac diseases, if left untreated.

Sometimes, blood pressure can rise to a very high level before it is detected because the patient experiences no symptoms. When that happens, medications have to be given to keep the condition under control and prevent further injury to the organs.

Treatment

Since hypertension is often associated with a cluster of co-existing problems, the treatment of hypertension does not only involve lowering the blood pressure it is also important to reduce other risk factors that jointly contribute to the consequences like cardiac diseases and renal failure, or those that add up to cause injury to the body. These include controlling the blood sugar level, cholesterol and uric acid.

And what can you do to reduce the risk? Plenty – watch your diet, reduce obesity, exercise and adopt a healthy, smoke-free lifestyle. It also helps to be proactive – take an interest in your own health by doing measuring your BP regularly with a home - use blood pressure monitor, go for regular health checks, and take your hypertension medication as prescribed.

In summary, the battle plan for hypertension treatment consists of three key approaches: Prevention, Early Detection and Intervention.

Drawing on his original research and his experience treating thousands of hypertensive patients, Dr. Mann argues that many cases are a result of repressed -- or hidden -- emotions. While presenting fascinating, dramatic case studies, Dr. Mann outlines how readers can determine whether or not hidden emotions are causing hypertension in themselves or in a family member. He also offers a unique way for readers to select medications based on the cause of their hypertension.

Hypertension Medications

How do you know if you have hypertension, and what you can do to control it?

Hypertension, or high blood pressure now affects one in three women and two in every five men - but 90 percent of people who suffer from hypertension still do not know what it is. Despite the millions pounds of research that has taken to investigate hypertension, its causes are still unclear in most cases - a fact that seems pretty scary, taking note that people with high blood pressure have a much higher risk of developing heart disease or stroke. So how do you know if you have hypertension - And, if so, what steps can be taken to control it?

The only real way to identify high blood pressure and whether you have hypertension is to visit your doctor or nurse and blood pressure measurement. Most doctors advise that the average person has their blood pressure at least once every five years. In most cases a good blood pressure reading is said to be somewhere around 120/80.

However, it is important to remember if your blood pressure checked and read he seems a little low or high, it may not necessarily be because you have hypertension: in fact, your blood pressure increases if you are worried or stressed, as can be lessened if feeling especially relaxed.

Many people these days buy their own blood pressure monitor so that they can make a series of readings to your GP who can then decide whether the readings are added to someone who has hypertension. If you do this, it is best to vary the circumstances in which you take action, for example, take some when you relax in front of the television and others when you are stressed or have been exercise. When the physician analyzes these readings or she will have a much more accurate picture of what your blood pressure does in his normal life.

If they give you high blood pressure medications (antihypertensives), make sure tell your pharmacist before buying any OTC medicine for coughs or colds. Some medications are incompatible with medicine that is designed to reduce blood pressure, but your pharmacist should usually be able to advise you on which remedies are safe to eat. It is also possible that you may have doubts about taking medication for hypertension and if this is the case, you should discuss your concerns with your doctor.

However, making changes in your lifestyle could mean that you can avoid the need to take medication for high blood pressure altogether. For example, regular exercise or making the effort to keep your weight down to its optimum level could eliminate the need for you to take tablets to reduce your blood pressure. Furthermore, the reduction of consumption of salt to six grams a day, maintaining a healthy diet and trying to reduce your stress levels may also have significant benefits.

Even if you take these measures, the doctor may decide that the only way to completely control your blood pressure is for you to take the medication. This does not mean have failed because people still very healthy lifestyles can have hypertension since it is usually an inherited condition and continuing these measures healthy can reduce the number of hypertension pills you have to take to properly control the disease.
