What is the life expectancy of an adult with untreated congenital heart disease?
It is very variable as congenital heart disease broad spectrum. There are very mild, such as bicuspid aortic valve without obstruction or leak that has a period of nearly normal life. The same is true of small atrial septal defects, small ventricular septal defect and small patent ductus arteriosus. At the other end of the spectrum is complex congenital heart disease with limited survival within hours or days. Most adults with untreated congenital heart disease have relatively milder forms, only by the fact that they survived to adulthood. But a person who one could be a severe form. It is not wise to judge only by the common title of "untreated congenital heart disease." Survival depends on the specific disorder, which has to be thoroughly assessed by the doctor and discussed.
